An inferior vena cava (IVC) filter is a medical device that is implanted in the body to catch blood clots before they migrate to the lungs. These clots can cause a pulmonary embolism or stroke when they break off and travel through the bloodstream, typically from the veins in the legs. FDA Issues Safety Warnings On IVC Filters
After receiving over 900 adverse event reports about IVC filters manufactured by C.R. Bard and Cook medical companies, the FDA issued an initial safety commission warning the public that temporary, retrievable IVC filters could pose a health risk when not removed promptly after the risk of blood clots had subsided.
The FDA then issued a further warning of the risks of these devices if left in the body too long, and recommended retrieving IVC filters within 29 to 54 days of implantation, as long as a patient was no longer at risk for a pulmonary embolism.
Scientific Study Finds Dangerous Safety Risks
A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that retrievable IVC filters manufactured by C.R. Bard had a high rate of fractures and incidents of fragmenting, especially when left in the body for longer periods of time. Patients who have suffered serious side effects including heart attacks, organ damage, and vein perforation requiring additional surgeries have filed suit against the IVC filter manufacturers, alleging dangerous and defective design. The Recovery IVC Filter and G2 IVC Filter System have both been cited in Plaintiff's lawsuits filed across the country. Neither filter has yet been recalled by the manufacturer.
